15mm Viking Figures AVAILABLE NOW!

Viking were Scandinavian explorers, warriors, merchants, and pirates who raided and colonized wide areas of Europe from the late eighth to the early eleventh century. These Norsemen used their famed longships to travel as far east as Constantinople and the Volga River in Russia, and as far west as Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland. According to custom, all free men (Bondi) were required to own weapons, as well as permitted to carry them at all times. A wealthy Viking would have a complete ensemble of a helmet, shield and chainmail shirt and would be armed with swords, spears, daggers, axes and hammers. Bows were used in the opening stages of land battles, and at sea, but tended to be considered less "honorable" than a hand weapon. Vikings were relatively unique for the time in their use of axes as a main battle weapon. The Huscarls (the elite guard of Kings) were armed with two-handed axes which could split shields or metal helmets with ease.
Besides the Scandinavians themselves, only the British called the marauders "Vikings," and this word may come from vik; or bay, and Viken, as the Oslo Fjord was called, from which the earliest Viking ships emerged. Other authorities maintain that the name came from the Old Norse term i viking, which is the equivalent of "a-raiding," as in "they went a-raiding down the Atlantic coast." But "Viking" was never a blanket term for the whole people of the region until it became a popular, modern misuse.
This range was originally commissioned by Bryan of 50 Paces and sculpted by M. Campagna. We have now acquired all rights for it and we have already started working on new packs, including skirmishers with javelins, mounted scouts, mounted commands, personalities, camp followers, a full scale (1:100) Snekke with crew, raiders with booty, Valkyries, even the mighty Odin himself, riding on Sleipner and with Gere and Freke to boot!

15mm Viking Foot Command

A Viking raid nearly always came as a total surprise. The Vikings were expert navigators and knew the coasts of Europe like the back of their hand. They decided on a target and planned the attack in advance. Having the fastest ships of the day they would arrive seemingly out of nowhere close to the target and storm ashore ready to attack. Horses were not carried along on such expeditions.

15mm Viking Spearmen Shieldwall

Perhaps the most famous Viking battle tactic was the "shield wall". When they were to fight an open field battle, the spearmen would usually pick the grounds and form a line with their shields interlocking, while warriors behind them shoot arrows or threw spears.

15mm Viking Bondi with Swords

The sword was the weapon of choice of the wealthy warriors and the aristocracy of the Viking Age. The blade was sharp on both edges, around 90cm long including the tang (10cm), with a blade 7 cm wide at the top, tapering to a slightly blunt tip. The sword was a slashing weapon, not generally used for thrusting.

15mm Viking Bondi with Axes

The characteristic weapon of the Vikings, the axe is found in many burials and is shown on several carved stones. These unarmored warriors use a short, single-handed version and carry a shield in the other hand. In the rest of Europe the axe had been superceded by the sword by this time, but most Vikings were improvised raiders rather than professional soldiers and did make good use of what weapons they had, ready to take up the sword of the first enemy they fell!

15mm Viking Archers

There is much evidence of the use of archery by Vikings, for example in the History of Saint Olav, who was born in 995 and ruled Norway from 1015 to 1030 AD: "They who stood foremost struck blows, they who were next thrust with spears, and all who came up behind, shot with spears or arrows or cast stones or hand axes or javelins." Bows found in Viking era burials provide archeological evidence of the types of bows actually used by Viking warriors. They are large, classically shaped and proportioned longbows made of yew. From their size and proportions it is estimated that their draw weight was probably around one hundred pounds, a powerful bow, indeed! An arrow shot from a Viking bow would almost certainly pierce a mail shirt at short range, but at longer ranges could only threaten unarmoured warriors unless a lucky shot hit an exposed area.

15mm Viking Armoured Hurcarls

The "Boar's Snout" or "Swine Array" (Svinfylka) is a battle technique that was said Odin himself gave to the vikings. They would form wedges protected by their shields and charge the enemy lead by the most experienced and best equipped warriors. The sheer weight and momentum of the charge could drive the wedge through an opposing shield wall, turning the battle and spreading panic through the enemy.

15mm Viking Hurcarls with 2 handed Axes

Despite appearances the "Danish Axe" of 1-1.5 metres in length, was a weapon of complex construction which resulted in a lively and quick weapon with devastating cutting ability. Wielded in two hands with a swing could behead horses with one stroke. Historical accounts invariably depict the Danish Axe as the weapon of the warrior elite. Perhaps best known from the scenes on the Bayeaux Tapestry which depict Harold's huscarls wielding the axes with two hands against the Norman cavalry it is known to have been used by the Varangian Guard, also known as "pelekyforos froura", the "axe-bearing guard".

15mm Viking Berserkers

Berserkers appear prominently in a multitude of sagas and poems which describe them as ravenous barbarians who loot, plunder, and kill indiscriminately. Historically, Norse warriors who wore coats of wolf or bear skin and who were commonly understood to have fought in an uncontrollable rage or trance of fury, are well attested. King Harald Fairhair's use of berserker "shock troops" broadened his sphere of influence. Other Scandinavian kings used berserkers as part of their army of hirdmen and sometimes ranked them as equivalent to a royal bodyguard.

15mm Viking scouts on foot

The fear of the Viking raiders terrified the people of Europe. Not only were they merciless, but also they carried on their raids with zest and efficiency. The raiders struck swiftly and secretly: after hiding their boats their scouts will carry on a through reconnaissance, collecting and gathering information about an enemy's composition and capabilities, identifying targets and routes, carefully planning the attack; only then they would pounce on their unsuspecting victims. They had the upper hand before the invaded people knew what had happened. They killed, robbed, burned, and then escaped with such thorough preparation and with such speed that more often than not their victims had no chance to organize the defense or attempt a reprisal on them.

15mm Viking mounted scouts

Viking raiders soon learned to find and steal the horses as soon as they invaded a village or town. They would gather all the horses they could find in the vicinity of their landings and use them to maximize the mobility of their patrol and scouting parties. Sometimes they even carried a few horses on special boats for this purpose.

These tents were used by both Vikings and Saxons; period illustrations of these tents are remarkably consistent in the type of tent they show, they appear to be identical to the tents used in the rest of mainland Europe at this time, and therefore are really suitable for most nations and armies of this period. Our model is scaled for 15mm figures and will fit on a standard 40x40mm DBM baggage base.
